Sponsor These Shelter Animals

In Time to Bring Them to Safety

The animals featured here are some of the hundreds Homeward Trails is asked to rescue each week. We have limited time to get them  safely to rescue. Space and money are the greatest barriers to us saying yes to each request. It costs approximately $150 to rescue each dog and $100 to rescue each cat. This includes basic vet care, fuel for transport, and housing once they arrive at HT.

Please note that we make every effort to rescue all animals that are fully sponsored. Rare exceptions occur if the shelter secures a home locally with short notice or an unexpected serious medical or behavioral issue arises preventing the transport of the animal. In these cases, your sponsorship funds will be applied immediately to another animal in need if the animal you sponsored is no longer available for transfer to Homeward Trails.

Your sponsorship of an animal will save a life in real time. Every donation helps save a life.

Please, consider a tax-deductible donation today to help these animals. They deserve a 2nd chance at life. And together, we can give them that.

Milo Might Be The World’s Cutest Beagle!

Milo was surrendered by his owner.

Could Milo be one of the cutest beagles in the world? We certainly think so! Unfortunately, despite Milo’s adorableness, he has found himself homeless at a rural VA shelter. This one year old precious boy was sadly surrendered to the shelter by his owner that had far too many animals to care for.  Milo likely didn’t realize it, but his life could have been in danger from an overcrowded living situation. Milo went from a very busy home to a very lonely shelter. Somehow, his sweet puppy dog eyes have not been able to convince anyone to adopt him yet. However, Homeward Trails saw one picture and knew Milo had to be next on the list to be rescued. The only catch now is that Milo’s rescue has to be fully sponsored before he can make the trip up to a HT foster home. Please don’t let this precious boy get left behind and donate to his future today!

We Can’t Say No to Po!

Po is patiently waiting for a new lease on life.

Poor Po! This 10 month old lab mix was surrendered by his owner to a rural West Virginia shelter. Po is the sweetest boy and has no idea how he went from a fun car ride to a sad life living in a cage. Po was once cared for and living a comfortable life, but now he receives just enough to get by and sleeps on a hard plastic bed. Po is so young and has his whole life ahead of him, which is why it is so sad that at such a young age, he is already learning how lonely life can be. Homeward Trails wants to help this sweet pup as soon as possible. He can secure a ride to a DC area foster by the end of the week, but only if his rescue is fully sponsored. Your donations can really make the difference between Po’s life completely turning around and starting new, or a life where he lives his years out behind bars. Please help Po get ready to go!

Puppies Are Growing Up In a Rural Shelter

Precious 7 month old puppies need Homeward Trails’ help so they don’t have to grow up behind bars.

These two adorable puppies are sadly growing up without a loving family. They were brought to the shelter several weeks ago with their mother and siblings, and have sat patiently waiting for someone to come along and adopt them. At only 7 months old, they are the perfect age for so many loving homes and it is so shocking that no one has come forward to rescue them yet. The rural VA shelter can only provide the bare minimum in care for the dogs, and these puppies deserve so much more than that. Please help Homeward Trails save these cuties. They don’t have to spend one more night in the shelter if their rescue fees are raised. Please help these sweet babies get on the next ride to a DC area foster and you’ll be the first part of the rest of their lives!

Surrendered When His Owner Went to the Hospital

Major’s life has been turned upside down and Homeward Trails wants to save him asap!

Poor Major’s life has been turned upside down. At only 9 months old, this beagle/dachshund mix went from living with an owner he loved to a cold cage in a rural West Virginia shelter. Major’s owner had to go to the hospital and could no longer care for him, so he was sadly left behind at the shelter. Major is so confused. Why is he away from the only family he knows, and why is he in such a scary and lonely place? Major is just a puppy and needs socialization and love. The isolation can be quite depressing and Major needs to get out of the shelter as soon as possible so he can continue to grow and thrive. Please help Homeward Trails with this major task – raising enough funds to rescue Major! Your donations can help this little guy get on the next ride the Homeward Trails. The sooner his rescue is fully sponsored, the sooner he can be out of the lonely shelter and into a warm and comfortable foster home. Major could use a major break so please consider donating today!

Jack was found by police

This poodle wants a family.

Jack is a 5-year-old poodle found by police in rural Virginia. He was brought to the shelter, but his odds of getting adopted aren’t great. The shelter is overcrowded and gets more dropoffs than adoptions. We know he’d be quickly adopted here, but we could use some help in covering the costs of vetting and transporting him. Can you help us give Jack the life he deserves?

Oliver was a community dog.

Oliver is an adorable 1-year-old poodle who has been loved, but hasn’t had the safety and warmth of a family. This dog was a “community dog” in southern Virginia. Fabio and Lucia need a fresh start

These two were surrendered by their owner.

Fabio and Lucia are perplexed to be in a shelter. These 1.5-year-old hound mixes were living in a home in rural Virginia. But the owners had too many dogs and dropped the duo off at the shelter. Their odds of getting adopted aren’t great at this crowded shelter, but we know they’d get quickly snapped up in northern Virginia. Can you help us get them here so they can find forever families?

The beagle sisters need your help

They were found alone in the mountains.

We don’t know exactly how these 10-month-old beagle sister ended up deep in the mountains in rural Virginia. But they’re lucky a kind man found them and rescued them. Nevin Doesn’t Deserve to Be Homeless

Poor Nevin was never claimed by his owner and now needs a rescue’s help!

Tiny Nevin is a 5 year old long haired chihuahua mix. This adorable little guy was found as a stray in rural VA. When he was originally brought into the shelter, staff surely thought that Nevin’s owners would come looking to claim him quickly. However, much to everyone’s surprised, not only has Nevin not been claimed, no potential adopters have been interested in adopting Nevin either! Poor Nevin deserves to much more than a life in a rural shelter. He is keeping his upbeat spirit, but days have turned into weeks and weeks into months and Nevin is starting to lose hope that anyone will come get him. He was able to survive life as a stray, and is hoping that the end of his story doesn’t happen at the shelter. Please help Homeward Trails get Nevin some needed veterinary care and on the next trip up to the DC area. We know this little guy will make so many people happy, but first his rescue fees have to be covered. Please donate to Nevin’s new life today!

Baby Finley Was Surrendered

Finley is still a puppy and wants nothing more than to be saved from the shelter.

Sweet little Finley is just a baby! This precious 9 month old puppy was surrendered by her owner to a rural VA shelter. Finley is so confused. One minute she was living with the love and comforts of a home, and the next she was locked in a cage with a hard plastic bed to lay on. Being a puppy in a shelter is no walk in the park. There are loud noises, strange smells and endless amounts of animals coming in and out. Some of the dogs that come in are at risk of spreading scary sicknesses to puppies like Finley. It is clear that the shelter is no place for this girl. Homeward Trails knows the urgency to get Finley out of the shelter, but first her rescue has to be fully sponsored. Can you help raise enough funds so Finley can get out of the shelter asap? Please don’t let this sweet girl get left behind and donate to her rescue today!

Marlo is Ready To Go… To a New Home!

Marlo is way too cute to be in a shelter. Please help Homeward Trails rescue her asap.

Marlo is way too cute to be in a shelter! This 6 month old lab mix was sadly surrendered by her owner to a rural shelter in West Virginia. She is so confused. How could a good girl like Marlo be discarded by the only family she loved? We don’t know the circumstances for why Marlo was given up, but we do know that she deserves to be with an owner that will keep her forever. Homeward Trails is certain this sweetheart would be adopted in no time, but until she is able to get out of the shelter and up to the DC area, Marlo will continue to live in solitary confinement at the shelter. Please don’t let this puppy become a statistic – just another homeless rural dog with no chance of being rescued. Donate to Marlo’s future before it is too late!

Little Lady Would Love to be Rescued

Lady is patiently waiting for someone to save her from a life behind bars.

Lady is quite the looker! This pretty 1 year old wire-haired terrier mix has sadly found herself at a rural VA shelter. She was once cared for and living a nice life with her owner, but that all changed  in one day. Lady’s owner took her for a car ride and sadly, the destination was a rural VA shelter. Duke is So Sad That He is Homeless

Duke looks like he is about to cry. Please help Homeward Trails cheer this boy up and save him.

Poor Duke is so sad. This sweet 1 year old beagle is homeless and living at a rural VA shelter.  He was found as a stray and no one knows how long he hasn’t had a home for. His eyes say it all though – he is sad and lonely. Life as a stray is hard enough, but Duke’s life likely hasn’t improved much being in a shelter either. What he really wants is a home to call his own, with owners that will love him forever. Homeward Trails would be delighted to get him on the next ride to the DC area, and some veterinary care as well. The only thing standing in the way now is that his rescue has to be fully sponsored before he can be saved from the shelter. Can you help make Duke’s dreams of a forever family come true? The first step is raising enough donations to get him out of the shelter and on the path to safety and health. Please sponsor Duke so he doesn’t have to spend one more night alone!

Sweetheart Ruby is tired of living alone and would love if Homeward Trails can save her.

Ruby is living a pretty boring life at a rural VA shelter. This beautiful 3 year old heeler mix was found as a stray. Ruby knows she’s lucky to be alive, as life for a stray dog is downright dangerous. Moving cars, aggressive animals, and no food and water were daily threats for poor Ruby. She was lucky enough to be picked up and brought to the shelter, but weeks have gone by and not a single owner or prospective adopter has stepped up to adopt Ruby. Ruby doesn’t deserve this. She deserves to be wanted and loved by a family of her own. The final hurdle is Ruby’s rescue raising enough funds to rescue her from the shelter. Pack Puppies Take Flight

Stray PR puppies need homes!

8 week old puppies Lisa and Carolina were born into 1 of 2 litters–which totaled 16 puppies– from moms living as part of a stray pack of dogs in Puerto Rico.  The two moms carried their litters and gave birth together in the woods, hiding in destroyed gutters and under bushes.  As the pups started to grow, the litters started to follow their pack into the streets where they could have easily been killed by traffic or poisoned by locals who see the strays as a nuisance.  Local rescuers spent 3 days rounding up the puppies and getting them into safe foster homes. Unfortunately, the mothers are still on the loose but the team is doing their best to make sure they can be caught and spayed, preventing future litters.  Lisa and Carolina have found the help of generous flight volunteers willing to sponsor their flights and carry them to HT but we still need your help to make sure these pups get the vetting and care they need to find loving forever homes in VA.  Please help these 2 fluffy girls start their new lives now!

Sweet Caroline Is Waiting For a Rescue to Save Her

Caroline is patiently waiting to be rescued after living life as a stray.

Sweet Caroline was living life as a stray in rural VA. This 2 year old girl was starving, dehydrated, and honestly is lucky to be alive. Life as a stray dog is very scary. She was always on the search for food and water, and had to also be alert for other animals that may try to hurt her, or a car to accidentally hit her on the road. Luckily for Caroline, she was found by animal control before anything tragic happened. Caroline now lives day in and day out at a rural VA shelter. While the shelter is a step up from living life outside alone, it is certainly no place for a dog to live forever. The only missing piece is that her rescue funds must be covered before she can leave the shelter. We Need to Save Scruffy and Her 7 Puppies!

This family is in desperate need of help. Can you help Homeward Trails rescue her?

Scruffy has been through so much! This 3 year old mama was living at a very high kill shelter in Georgia. She was so scared and in need of a lot of TLC. Sadly, the shelter is only able to provide the bare minimum, so Scruffy wasn’t getting any additional support that she needed before she delivered her babies. A local foster in Georgia stepped up and was able to take Scruffy in until she had her puppies. Now, all 7 puppies and Scruffy are ready to find themselves forever homes. Because they are so tiny still, they aren’t able to fly to any shelters and rely on rescues that can provide ground transportation to rescue them. Homeward Trails heard about this little family and feel confident that they are the right rescue to help! Taking on 7 babies and their mama is a very big undertaking, but with your donations, HT is ready to take on the challenge. Please sponsor this precious family and support the rescue of 8 very deserving dogs!

Surrendered due to no fault of her own, Carnation needs medical care ASAP and a fresh start.

Carnation is a black, brown, and white, 3-year-old beagle mix that was surrendered to a southern Virginia shelter due to no fault of her own. She was given up along with a couple of other dogs by their owner. Unfortunately, Carnation is heartworm positive and will require treatment – otherwise she will end up very sick and has a high risk of succumbing to it. Southern Virginia shelters often have low resources, low foot traffic, and are often loud and crowded, making euthanasia a high risk, especially for sick dogs like Carnation. Can you help bring Carnation to Homeward Trails so that she can receive the critical medical care she needs as well as a safe, peaceful place to heal until she finds a loving forever family?

Senior Wilbur Deserves a Home to Spend His Golden Years

Wilbur deserves to live his golden years loved and safe.

Although the clinic staff have been taking good care of him ever since he was left in their lobby, they know it is time that he finds a forever home to spend the rest of his golden years. A shelter – nor a vet clinic lobby – are a place for a senior dog to spend their days. Can you help sponsor bringing Wilbur to Homeward Trails so he has his best chance at finding the forever home he deserves?

Marley and Newborn Pups at High Risk

Momma and newborn pups currently at very high risk in a rural shelter.

Marley is a short, stout brown, black, and white beagle that was surrendered due to no fault of her own – along with her three absolutely adorable beagle / yorkie mix puppies – to a shelter in rural Virginia. This momma is only 2 years olds, and her babies are only 6 weeks old – which means they cannot be given the necessary vaccinations and medical care they need to safely be around other dogs, especially in an enclosed, crowded shelter environment. Rural Virginia shelters often have low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates,  putting Marley and her babies – especially her newborn babies – at very high risk. Intervention is necessary to keep Marley and her babies healthy and happy – especially as they most likely need placed in a foster home until the babies are old enough to be safely exposed to other dogs. Can you help bring Marley and her newborn pups to Homeward Trails so they can receive the care they need and be safely placed until they are all ready to go to their forever homes?

This puppy needs a family!

Liberty is so young to be stuck in a shelter. This 7-month-old shepherd mix was brought to a West Virginia shelter by her owner, who could no longer take care of Liberty. This pup has so much life ahead, and we know she’ll be so happy with a family. Can you chip in so we can find Liberty a loving home?

Donny and Marie want to sing a new tune

These puppies’ owners appear to have abandoned them.

Donny and Marie are 7-week-old puppies who were found as strays in southern Virginia. They must have had a home at one point because they were wearing collars when they were found, but no one ever showed up at the shelter to claim them. We can’t change what happened to this duo, but we can give them a brighter future. Can you help us find families for Donny and Marie?

Sad Siblings Surrendered

Bella and Savage were surrendered by their owner and need a rescue to save them.

Bella and Savage were living with their owner, who they loved and adored. At only 1 years old, Bella and Savage thought they were set for life. They had a comfortable home, and were well cared for. Sadly, suddently these two Collie/Retriever mix pups were surrendered to a southern VA shelter. Their owner was no longer able to take care of them and felt they had no choice but to give them up. Bella and Savage are so confused. That short car ride completely changed the rest of their life. Now, instead of having a quiet home and comfortable bed, they are surrounded by barking dogs and have nothing but a cement floor to lay on. Homeward Trails saw these two and immediately jumped into action, trying to get them rescued as soon as possible. The last stepping stone is raising enough funds to cover their rescue fee, and to get them on a ride to the DC area. Can you help these sweet siblings get out of the shelter immediately?

Precious Puppies are In Dire Need of Help

Six tiny puppies don’t stand a chance in a rural shelter!

Little puppies Sage, Smalls, Skippy, Scout, Sahara and Shadow are precious 12 week old lab mixes who are living a sad life. These sweet babies were surrendered by their owner due to financial and housing issues. The puppies likely only knew their owner’s home and are in quite a bit of shock about what their life looks like now. Each puppy is living behind a cage door at the rural VA shelter where they now live. Puppies are susceptible to illnesses and diseases, and even more so when stuck inside a tiny shelter with stray dogs. Homeward Trails would hate for one, or all six, of these cuties to get ill. In order to get them to safety, their rescue fee has to be fully funded. That means that if the goal isn’t met, one of these sweet babies might get left behind! Please don’t let that happen and donate to this precious litter’s future, outside of a shelter!

Sweet Beagles Have Lived Their Whole Lives Outside

These beagles deserve a loving home. Homeward Trails needs your help to get them to safety!

Gertie, Gretchen, Gordy and George are four very shy 3 year old beagles. These sweethearts have lived outside for most of their lives and have been very sheltered from the world. They were never given the chance to explore and meet new people. Instead, they only had each other to keep company with. Their owners finally decided to surrender them to a rural VA shelter. Although they are now saved from living their life outside, they are at risk of euthanasia at the very full shelter. Homeward Trails wants to get them out of the shelter as soon as possible, before they might meet a very sad fate. To make matters worse, Gretchen is pregnant and will need special care during her pregnancy and for the birth of her puppies. Please help us save these beagles before their time is up at the shelter. Gertie, Gretchen, Gordy and George are depending on us to get them on the next ride to Homeward Trails. Please help save these deserving dogs!

Missy is Missing Out on Life!

Missy is waiting patiently for a rescue to save her, and Homeward Trails would love to help her!

Missy is such a love, which makes it that much sadder that her owners moved away and surrendered her to a rural VA shelter. Missy is only 2 years old and has her whole life ahead of her. Sadly, since the day she walked into the shelter, it seems as though time has stopped. Missy days have no joy, only sadness and loneliness. Each day, she waits patiently for someone to come forward and adopt her but no one has paid her any attention. Homeward Trails would hate for this sweet girl to waste away behind bars. If her rescue fees are funded, Missy can be on the next ride up to a DC area foster. Please sponsor Missy so she doesn’t have to miss one more day of love from a new family!

Spangler was found abandoned in a house

This dog deserves better.

It’s tough to fathom the cruelty that would lead an owner to just leave a dog behind in a house. This 2-year-old mixed breed pup was found in a house in rural Virginia after his owner left. We don’t know how long he was there alone, but we know Spangler deserves better. Let’s find this dog a loving home, where he can forget this horrible abandonment and move forward with his life. Can you help us?

Tulip Needs a Loving Family to Bloom

Can you help sponsor bringing Tulip to Homeward Trails so she has her best shot at finding her loving forever family?

Can you give Chance a second chance?

Marcus needs a loving home

His owner brought him to the shelter.
Marcus is confused about why he’s stuck in a shelter. This shelter doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic, and Marcus isn’t likely to be adopted there. But we know this sweet guy would thrive again in a home, and we’re certain we can find him one. Can you chip in so we can get him out of the shelter and up here?

Nova can’t wait to get out of the shelter and up to Homeward Trails. Can you help save her?

Nova is a beautiful 2 year old German Shepherd mix. This very pretty girl was surrendered to a shelter in rural VA. She doesn’t know why she was surrendered but her life is far from easy now that she is a shelter. Shelter staff was sure that Nova would be adopted as soon as possible, but so far, not a single person has asked to take Nova home. Poor Nova is getting depressed from being overlooked time and time again. She is ready to get out from behind bars and into a new and loving home as soon as possible. The only thing standing in Nova’s way now is that she doesn’t have her rescue fully sponsored. With your donations, Nova’s amazing personality can truly come to life in a new and loving home!

Heartworms are Slowly Killing Poor Fawn

Fawn is desperate in need of a rescue to save her from a bleak future.

Poor Fawn is very sick. At only 6 months old, this young hound mix has found herself in a very sad situation. Fawn was rescued from life as a stray in rural VA. She had been likely scrounging for food and water for weeks, or longer. Fawn’s body was in rough shape when she arrived at the shelter, but bloodwork found that her condition was even worse than originally thought. Fawn tested positive for having heartworms, which can be fatal without proper treatment. The shelter is not equipped to provide that treatment, but Homeward Trails heard about this puppy and wants to help save her. Heartworm treatment isn’t cheap, but it so worth it when a dog can get healthy and live out a long and wonderful life. Fawn deserves all the help she can get. Your donations can make the difference between life and death for Fawn. Please sponsor her asap so that she can immediately come to the DC area and get life-saving medical treatment.

Toby is Worried He Will Be Forgotten

Sweet Toby has been homeless for so long that he is worried he will be forgotten!

Sweet Toby is so sad. This 5 year old beagle mix is homeless and lonely. Toby was found as a stray in rural VA.  We have no idea how long he was alone for, but once he was found and brought to a rural shelter, his life of solitude continued. Every day, Toby waits patiently at the cage door for either his old owner or a new adopter to come by and save him. Sadly, no one has stepped up to rescue poor Toby. Homeward Trails saw this precious face and is determined to pull him from the shelter. In order to do so, his rescue must be fully sponsored. With your donations, Toby could be living a life of freedom and joy instead of sorrow and sadness. Please sponsor Toby’s rescue today!

Stuck at a rural VA shelter, Kylie is at higher risk and needs brought to safety

Despite this, she is seemingly very sweet and is at higher risk where she is at, as rural shelters often have low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates. Can you help sponsor bringing Kylie to Homeward Trails so she can receive the TLC she needs and have her best shot at finding the loving forever family that she deserves?

These two 16-week-old pups deserve a chance to be given the care they need and live stress-free in a safe environment. Can you help sponsor removing Elroy and Ellie May from a higher-risk rural shelter to Homeward Trails so they can receive the care and safe placement they need until they go to their forever homes?

Reese’s Cup is super sweet mix that was found wandering alone in rural VA. He is so lucky to be alive. Life as a stray is dangerous and can be downright scary. Poor Reese’s Cup had to search day in and day out for food and water, all while avoiding getting hit by a car or attacked by a wild animal. Reese’s Cup was found and brought to a rural VA shelter. While it is a relief that he gets regular meals and has a safe place to sleep, living life in a cage is not ideal for this sweet boy. Reese’s Cup would be delighted to follow the Easter Bunny right into a new family’s home but first, he needs to be rescued from the shelter and brought to the DC area. Homeward Trails is prepared to have him on the next ride up but his sponsorship has to be fully covered to ensure that his rescue and vet fees are covered. Please help a true miracle happen for Reese’s Cup and donate to his future today!

Dipstick was found living on the streets

Dipstick needs a loving family.

We can’t know what happened to Dipstick that led him to living on the streets, but we can make this 1.5-year-old beagle mix’s life much better. Dipstick is stuck in a rural Virginia shelter after being found as a stray. We know this guy would thrive in a loving home, and we want to bring him here so he can find one. Can you help us?

Sassy and Chance Need Our Help Before It Is Too Late

Beagles Sassy and Chance are at serious risk of euthanasia!

Sassy and Chance are terrified that their life may be cut short. These one year old Beagles are currently living in a rural Virginia shelter. Unfortunately, not a single potential adopter has taken interest in them. They sit day in and day out, just wishing that one special person will choose them out of all the other dogs that are currently homeless at the shelter. Devastatingly, the shelter is at full capacity and therefore, dogs are now being scheduled to be euthanized to make room for others. Homeward Trails cannot bear the thought of these happy, healthy dogs facing a very tragic fate. Please sponsor their rescue so Sassy and Chance can be pulled from the shelter before their time is up. Your donations will be the difference between a life that might not see another day, and a life that is long and full of love with a new family!

Milo’s owner had too many dogs

Milo’s owner brought him to the shelter.

Milo is a six-month-old heeler mix who ended up in the shelter because his owner decided he had too many dogs and needed to give Milo up. Poor Milo is confused about how he ended up in the shelter and would do much better in a loving home. We’re committed to finding him one, but could use some help covering the costs of this puppy’s vetting and transportation. Can you help us give Milo the life he deserves?

A Heartbreaking Life for Six Puppies

Six adorable puppies have no mother and no home. Please help Homeward Trails save them.

Six adorable puppies desperately need our help. These poor puppies lost their mother either to poisoning or by getting hit by a car. It is devastating to think that one day, their mother just stopped coming to care for them. These tiny 7 week old babies were found alone in an empty school in Puerto Rico. Their mama tried her best to keep them alive and safe, but once the security guard on the property noticed that she stopped visiting, the guard immediately called for help. A kind woman was able to feed the puppies to ensure they did not starve, but it is time for a rescue to step in and bring them to the DC area. Homeward Trails heard the call for help from their Puerto Rico rescue partner and wants to step up as soon as possible to get these puppies to safety. This rescue is more difficult than many others as we have to secure 6 flights in addition to a lot of vet care to get the puppies to a place of health. Please donate today so that no puppy gets left behind!

Sweet Shilo Desperately Needs Help

Taken in as a stray to a rural VA shelter at only 9 months old, Shilo needs our help

Shilo is an absolutely precious, black and brown brindle Mountain Cur mix that was found wandering alone as a stray in rural Virginia. This sweetie is only 9 months old, and we have no idea what she’s endured so far or what put her out in the wilderness. Rural Virginia shelters have low resources, low foot traffic, and high euthanasia rates; and they are also often crowded, making it anxiety-inducing for dogs, especially ones that are already scared, unsure of their surroundings, and not used to the noise. Shilo is at a much higher risk at the shelter in rural Virginia. Can you help sponsor bringing Shilo to Homeward Trails where he can receive the TLC he needs and have his best chance at finding a loving forever family?

Help Make Merlin’s Dreams Come True

Poor Merlin wants nothing more than to find a new family to love!

Sweet Merlin was once in a loving home. He had an owner he adored, a soft place to sleep and regular meals that nourished his body. Merlin thought he had it made and would be valued family member for the rest of his life. Sadly, on day, Merlin’s owner was no longer able to take care of him and he was surrendered to a rural West Virgnia shelter. Poor Merlin’s whole life has been turned upside down. He now spends his days in a small cage, hoping that someone will take him home. At only a year old, this precious lab mix wants to get out of a life behind bars as soon as possible. Who can blame him, as he has his whole life to live!  Your donations can make Merlin’s dream of being adopted come true. Please help this handsome boy and his tail wags and happy smile will make you smile every day!

No Dog Ever Deserves to Live on a Chain

Poor Trix deserves a better life!

Poor Trix has lived his whole 5 years of life tied up on a chain. He has endured bitter cold as well as sweltering heat with no reprieve. Living life on a chain is not only lonely and isolating, but also extremely dangerous as well. Chains can easily twist, leading to accidental hanging, not to mention it make dogs very easy targets for predators. It is hard for any animal lover to imagine being tied to a post for years with no option to move or run and being subjected to living in your own filth. Thank goodness Trix, a cattle dog beagle mix, was given up to a rural VA shelter. This was the first time he had ever known freedom, or even the comfort of sleeping under a roof with heating and air conditioning. Homeward Trails wants this very deserving dog to never have to look back at his old life. With your donations, Trix can be on the next ride up to the DC area. This means he can sleep in a foster’s home with soft beds, and be loved on daily by kind people! Please don’t let Trix spend another night of his life living in loneliness. Your sponsorship will be the reason this pup gets a new start!

Tiny Mateo is Too Small to be Living in a Shelter

Little Mateo is just a puppy and deserves to be living his life in a loving home.

Tiny Mateo barely had time to live in his family’s home and was already surrendered by his owner.  At only 12 weeks old, Mateo is far too young to be living in a rural VA shelter. The shelter is not safe for a puppy of this age. Sicknesses and diseases are very contagious, and a puppy’s immature immune system might not be able to fight off a fatal sickness. Mateo is waiting patiently for someone to adopt him but somehow keeps getting overlooked by potential owners! Homeward Trails is ready to step in and scoop up this little guy, but first his veterinary care and transportation to the DC area need to be secured by enough donations to rescue him from the shelter. Please donate to this little pup today so he can leap out of the shelter and into the safety of a new and loving home!

Tobby was attacked with a stick

Tobby appears to have been beaten and needs a loving family.

Tobby has such a sad story. This 3-year-old pup was initially found in Puerto Rico by a kind person who was doing trap, neuter, release work. Tobby came up to her, happy and seeking affection. The person planned to come back and try to rescue him but before that could happen, she received a call that he was hurt and believed to be hit by a car. However, when Tobby was taken to the vet with a fractured hip and femur, it was clear to the vet he was not hit by the car but instead hit with a stick or a pipe. There is a known guy in the area where Tobby was living that carries a stick to fend off strays. Tobby is on his way to a better life here, on a flight donated by a generous foster in Puerto Rico, but we could use some help covering his vet bills since he will likely need more care once he arrives. Tobby has suffered too much already — can you help us make the rest of his life wonderful?

Hershey is hoping St. Patrick’s Day is her lucky day

Hershey is supposed to catch a flight here on March 17.

Hershey was born on St. Patrick’s Day last year! Her mother gave birth on the side of a road in Puerto Rico; luckily, a family saw her and took the whole family in. The family kept them safe and eventually started giving the puppies away. But Hershey never found a family, and a local foster took care of her temporarily. Now, Hershey is hoping to be lucky on St. Patrick’s Day once again as she is slated to fly here on March 17! A generous foster in Puerto Rico is paying for her flight, but we could use some help covering the cost of vetting and caring for Hershey. She’s so close to a forever home — can you help us get her there?

Gus’s owner couldn’t keep him

Gus is looking for a loving family.

Gus, a 2-year-old hound mix, was dropped off at the shelter by his owner. This rural Virginia shelter doesn’t get a lot of adopters so Gus isn’t likely to find a family there. We know we can help him if we can just get him here.

Jersey’s owner couldn’t be found

Someone bought Jersey from a pet store and abandoned her.

Jersey is a 2-year-old beagle mix found roaming the streets in southern Virginia. She was microchipped so the shelter could determine she originally was purchased from a pet store but couldn’t find an owner. Jersey is ready for her forever family, and we want to help her. Can you pitch in to help us cover the costs of vetting and transportation?

Cosmo is such a lovable guy

Cosmo is a sweet guy who knows tricks!

Cosmo is an 8-month-old beagle mix who ended up in a shelter in West Virginia after his owner couldn’t take care of him. This sweet guy is friendly and can do tricks! He’s not used to life in a shelter and would do so much better in a loving home. We know we can find him one, but first we need to get him out of the shelter and to northern Virginia. Can you help us give Cosmo the life he deserves?

Marvelous Molly Needs a Fresh Start

Left at a shelter because her owner had too many animals, Molly needs our help

Molly is a tan, black, and white 1-year-old beagle mix that was surrendered due to no fault of her own. Her owner had too many animals and decided she was one of the ones she was going to surrender, so now Molly is stuck in a loud and crowded rural Virginia shelter. Rural Virginia shelters often have low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates, putting Molly at higher risk. Can you help bring Molly to Homeward Trails so that she has her best chance at a fresh start?

Lucy Surrendered and Looking for a Family

Found as a stray and never reclaimed, Suzie is very malnourished and needs our help

Lucy is a 1-year-old, smiley black lab mix with a white stripe on her chest that was surrendered by her owner due to no fault of her own. The owner had to move from West Virginia to take care of an ailing family member and could not find someone to take care of Lucy. A home is all poor Lucy has ever known – and she must be scared and confused in a low resource, low foot traffic rural shelter with higher euthanasia rates. Can you help sponsor bringing Lucy to Homeward Trails so she has her best chance at finding a loving forever family to call her own?

Momma Marissa & Newborn Pups Need Our Help

Abandoned at a shelter with her newborn pups, Marissa and her family are currently at high risk

Marissa is a 1-year-old brown, black, and white hound mix that was surrendered along with her newborn puppies to a shelter in rural Virginia. This poor young mom’s puppies – cute as a button brown, white, black, and tan pups – are barely 6 weeks old, meaning they are at high risk for illness and higher risk of death since they cannot be vaccinated until 12 weeks. A loud, crowded rural shelter with low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates is no place for a nursing mom and her newborn pups. Can you help bring Marissa and her sweet little family to Homeward Trails so they can receive the care they need and a safe place to wait for their forever homes?

Lucky Boy In Immense Pain and Needs our Help

Found broken and in immense pain, Lucky Boy’s best chance at a happy, healthy life requires expensive surgery and our help.

Lucky Boy is a handsome, brown and black mix (with expressive brown eyebrows!) that was found wandering alone and taken to one of our partner shelters. He is only 1.5 years old, but we do not know much about his past other than it must have had some pretty excruciating endeavors. He currently has a broken leg and is in immense pain; he needs evaluation and either amputation or a metal plate inserted to heal. Such a procedure is costly and requires a safe, attentive environment in order to be successful. Can you help bring Lucky Boy to Homeward Trails and help sponsor the surgery he needs in order to live pain-free, happy, and have a fresh start with a loving family?

The owner had to move from West Virginia to take care of an ailing family member and could not find someone to take care of Lucy. A home is all poor Lucy has ever known – and she must be scared and confused in a low resource, low foot traffic rural shelter with higher euthanasia rates. Can you help sponsor bringing Lucy to Homeward Trails so she has her best chance at finding a loving forever family to call her own?

Clover is ready for a better life

This 6-year-old girl needs some dental work to help her feel her best.

Clover was found homeless in southern Virginia. This six-year-old beagle is in need of some care after living a tough life. She particularly needs some dental work to help with her teeth. We want to get Clover the care she needs and find her a loving home, where she can thrive. Can you help us help Clover?

Wednesday and her puppies are in dire straits

Wednesday and her puppies need a safe, quiet spot where they can relax.

Wednesday is the mother of three 3-day-old puppies who ended up at a shelter in southern Virginia after the owners decided they couldn’t take care of all of them. Poor Wednesday must be so scared to be in this new and busy environment while trying to nurse and care for her tiny puppies. We think this little family deserves better, and we’d like to make sure they get the safe and quiet environment they need. It’s not easy to rescue families like this, and we could use your help covering the costs.

Whiskey, Bourbon and Rye are so young

These three puppies are ready to get out of the shelter!

Whiskey, Bourbon and Rye are only 7-week-old puppies! They were dropped off at a southern Virginia shelter by their owner. The shelter is no place for puppies this young, as they are susceptible to disease. We need to get them out and into a foster home, where they can rest in a quieter environment. We know these three have bright futures. Can you help us give this trio a better life ahead?

Lucky needs a chance to thrive with a family

Lucky is hoping his pot of gold comes in the form of a forever family!

Lucky is hoping to get lucky enough to escape the shelter. He was brought to a shelter in rural Virginia by his owner. His odds of adoption here aren’t great, but we know he’d be a great adoption candidate in northern Virginia. But we could use some help to get this guy up here so we can find him a forever family.

Junior Beat Parvo But Needs Our Help

Dumped due to parvo  but now better, Junior is looking for a family who will love him no matter what

Junior is a slightly-fuzzy, tan, 7-month-old chihuahua mix that was surrendered to a shelter in West Virginia. His family initially surrendered him because he had parvo and they couldn’t take care of him. Thankfully, Junior recovered and has been living in a foster home in West Virginia. Although he is doing good and is cute as a button, West Virginia has a high amount of stray and unclaimed dogs, and the shelters have low resources, low foot traffic, and high euthanasia rates. Can you help sponsor bringing Junior to Homeward Trails so that after beating a life-threatening illness he can find a loving forever family that he deserves?

Batman’s owner couldn’t keep him

Batman needs out of the shelter and into a forever family’s home.

Batman is so young to be stuck in a shelter! This 6-month-old lab/cur mix ended up in a rural Virginia shelter after his owner surrendered him. He’s confused how he ended up here and needs a quieter environment. We want to get Batman out and find him the loving home this superhero deserves. Can you chip in to cover the costs of vetting and transporting him?

Don’t Let This Smile Fool You, Shelby’s Life is Sad

Can we save Shelby before her smile turns upside down?

Shelby’s smile is covering up how she really feels. This 3 year old lab/flat coated retriever mix was found wandering alone in southern VA. No food, water, or shelter meant times were really tough for poor Shelby. She did everything she could to survive and was thankfully brought into a rural VA shelter before anything bad happened to her. Being in the shelter is only slightly better than life as a stray. Shelby gets daily meals and a safe place to sleep, but what she really wants is a new family to love! Shelby dreams of the day the perfect adopter comes to the rural shelter and decides to take her home. Shelby knows her dreams are far from a reality without a lot of help. Homeward Trails is ready to help make Shelby’s dreams. The only thing standing between Shelby and being rescued is her rescue be sponsored. Please don’t let Shelby’s beautiful smile fade from her face! Donate to this sweet girl’s transportation to Homeward Trails today.

Life is Anything but Blissful for Bliss

Bliss isn’t even a year old yet and has already found herself homeless.

Beautiful Bliss is a very young 8 month old German Shepherd puppy. She was found as a stray, wandering the streets and always searching for food and water.  We have no idea what happened to Bliss before she was found and turned in to a rural VA shelter but are glad she is now safe. Bliss is far too young to be living a solitary life behind bars. Puppies need a lot of socialization and stability to grow up and be happy, confident dogs! Bliss is no exception and every day she has to stay at the shelter is another day her personal growth is delayed. Please help get this sweet girl out of the shelter once and for all. Your donations will help her completely start her life over so she can become the best dog she can be!

Beau is Barely Making It Without a Home

Poor Beau is missing a family of his home. Help Homeward Trails get him out of the shelter.

Sweetheart Beau is really missing his family. This cute 2 year old beagle/bull dog mix was sadly surrendered by his owner that could no longer take care of him. He is so confused and scared. How could he go from a loving home to a cold shelter in a matter of minutes? He certainly didn’t deserve to be given away and wants nothing more than a new family he can be loyal to for the rest of his life. Homeward Trails is certain that this sweet boy will assimilate into a new home quickly, but first needs to raise enough funds to save him from the rural VA shelter he is living in. With your donations, Beau doesn’t have to be living in a cement dog run for much longer and can be on his way to the DC area as soon as this week! Please sponsor this lonely boy!

Tiny Baby Spock Was Left For Dead

Spock doesn’t want to grow old in a shelter. Please help us save him today!

This tiny puppy was found in a dumpster with his litter mates. Literally left for dead, Spock is lucky to be alive! At only 10 weeks old, it is a miracle he survived the trauma of being left behind to starve to death. This precious puppy deserves so much in life. Love, stability and the comfort of a home is the bare minimum he should have! Puppies need to be somewhere they can thrive and be cared for with TLC, and a rural VA shelter is not the place for them. Can you help us save Spock from a life behind bars? Your donation can bring this cutie to the DC area as soon as possible so he doesn’t have to spend one more night alone. Please don’t let this baby get left behind and sponsor his rescue before his time is up!

PC and Shade

These two puppies need a fresh start!

PC and Shade have had a tough start. These 14-week-old lab mix puppies got sick, and their owners couldn’t afford treatment so they ended up at a shelter in West Virginia. These adorable pups are healthy now and ready to find stable, loving homes where they can feel safe. Can you help us cover the costs of vetting and transporting this duo so they can have a wonderful future?

Valiant Victor Needs a Fresh Start

Surrendered due to no fault of his own, Victor is at high risk in a rural VA shelter

Victor is a petite, airplane-eared, brown-patched chihuahua / Corgi mix that was surrendered by his owner to a shelter in rural Virginia due to no fault of his own. His owner is moving and unable to take Victor with him. This sweet boy is only one year old and has only ever known life with his owner. He is scared and confused at his current shelter, which is rural, meaning they are often loud, crowded, have low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates. Can you help sponsor bringing Victor to Homeward Trails so he has his best chance at finding his forever family?

Luna is Looking for a Family to love

Little Luna misses having a family to love. Help Homeward Trails save her from loneliness.

Adorable Luna is a 2 year old lab mix who loved her family. She is a loyal and sweet girl. Unfortunately, none of that seemed to matter when her owner surrendered her to a rural VA shelter. Poor Luna has no idea why she was given up. No more soft bed to lay in, quiet house to sleep at or loving family to spend time with. Luna’s days are now filled with hard plastic beds, scary barking and other noises at the shelter and little interaction with humans. Although the shelter is trying to keep Luna’s spirits up, what she really needs is a rescue to get her out of a life behind bars. Homeward Trails would love to save this petite 29 lb lab mix and find her a new family, but they need to raise enough funds to rescue her. Luna needs veterinary care and a rescue ride to a DC area foster. With your help, this sweetheart doesn’t have to spend one more night alone. Please help Luna shine again!

Help Bring Joy to a New Family

Surrendered due to her owner dying, Joy suddenly finds herself scared and alone in a rural VA shelter and needs help

Joy is a tan, white-chested collie / hound mix from rural Virginia. This rotund, folded-ear gal has fallen upon very unfortunate circumstances – her owner has died and the owner’s family did not want to keep her. The only home and family she’s known for 3 years is now gone, Joy still seems to be all smiles. Rural Virginia shelters often have low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates. Can you help bring Joy to Homeward Trails so she can not only give but receive the joy and love she deserves in a wonderful forever home?

Sweet Sadie is Patiently Waiting for a Savior

Sadie would love to get out of the shelter and Homeward Trails is waiting with open arms.

Living as a stray can be downright scary. Starvation, dehydration, other animals and speeding cars are just few of the reasons why life as a stray is so dangerous. Poor Sadie Was found living alone in rural VA. This 2 year old cattle dog was brought into a rural shelter, where she has been waiting patiently for her family to come and claim her. Unfortunately, no one has come. Sadie might be safer at the shelter than homeless and alone, but her life is still just as scary. Sadie craves the love and comforts only a family can provide. The days and weeks are turning to months and Sadie continues to live her life behind a cage door as no one has stepped up to adopt her. This is not how anyone would want a happy girl live! Homeward Trails is the perfect rescue for such a perfect pup and would love to put her on the next ride to the DC area. The only thing standing in her way is her rescue being sponsored. Please donate to Sadie’s new life and she’ll be thankful for years to come!

Saved from a hoarder but not out of harm’s way

Spritz and Snowball need a lifeline before it is too late.

Sweet siblings Spritz and Snowball are in dire need of help. At only 7 months old, they have lived a pretty hard life so far. Thess mix breed pups were part of a tragic hoarding case where they are lucky to be alive. Spritz and Snowball were brought into a rural West Virginia shelter where staff thought they would find a new home in no time. Sadly though, these two cuties have had no interest and continue to become a statistic: just another puppy growing up behind a shelter cage door. To make matters even worse, the shelter is completely overcrowded and has been left with no choice but to start euthanizing dogs to make room for new ones coming in. These puppies’ lives are at serious risk of ending up on the euthanasia list. The only way to ensure they can be spared is if a rescue comes to take them before it is too late. Homeward Trails heard the cry for help and would be thrilled to step up and be the savior for these puppies. As soon as their rescue is sponsored, Spritz and Snowball can be on the next ride to Homeward Trails. Please don’t let their lives hang in the balance and donate to their freedom today!

Rocky’s Life is at serious risk

Can we save Rocky before it is too late?

Rocky’s life is dangerously close to being over. Rocky is an 11 month old Mountain Cur from West Virginia, where he is living a very depressing life in a rural shelter. We don’t know how he ended up there, but do know that the shelter is dangerously overcrowded. This sadly means that a mass euthanasia is scheduled for the end of the week because they are so full and need to make room for incoming dogs. The shelter staff do their absolute best to care for all the animals that come through their door, but at the end of the day, they are only able to help so much if adoptions are low and the cages become full. Rocky doesn’t deserve to have his life come to an end so soon. Homeward Trails would love to be his lifeline but needs to ensure his rescue is fully funded. Please consider donating to this sweet boy. His entire future is in the balance, and you can be the one that turns it all around! Please help Rocky run from the shelter and straight into the safety of Homeward Trails!

Being rescued would be music to Jaz’s ears

Jaz deserves a new life after being found as a stray.

This beautiful girl is Jaz! At only 6 months old, this husky mix has found herself alone at a rural VA shelter. Poor Jaz was living as a stray, scrounging for food, desperate for waters and constantly terrified of dangers around every corner. She was brought into the shelter where staff were sure that this blue eyed beauty would be claimed in no time. The days have turned to weeks though and not a single person has come forward to save Jaz. Being a puppy, Jaz craves human interaction and love, something that is scarce at the shelter she sadly calls home. Homeward Trails knows that Jaz deserves so much more, but can’t assure she will be rescued until she is fully sponsored. With your donations, this young pup can start the rest of her new life in the Dc area. Jaz is waiting patiently for someone to step up and save her. Can that someone be you?

Puppy Dog Eyes are BEgging to be saved

Sweet Blue Eyes is hoping Homeward Trails can be her saving grace.

Beautiful Blue Eyes is so sad. This 2 year old Mountain Cur mix had a family. She was loyal and loving, but despite that, was surrendered to a rural VA shelter when her elderly owner could no longer care for her or the other dogs in the home. Blue Eyes is understandably a bit frightend after being uprooted from her home, but that doesn’t keep her from giving her best puppy dog face. The shelter staff thought that surely someone would see this sweet girl and adopt her quickly, but no one has come for her yet and Blue Eyes continues to live in loneliness behind a cage door. Can you help Blue Eyes’ eyes twinkle again and donate to her rescue? As soon as her sponsorship is covered, Blue Eyes will be on the next trip to Homeward Trails!

Poor Dogs Were Living a Horrific Life

Dexter, Archie & Arlo’s owners were arrested but these poor dogs don’t deserve to be behind bars.

Dexter, Archie and Arlo were saved from a deplorable situation. They were living in a terrible hoarding home that was so awful that the owners were arrested. 3 year olds Dexter and Arlo, and 5 year old Archie are lucky to be alive after such neglect. Animals living in hoarding homes can suffer from terrible diseases, malnutrition and dehydration, not to mention the toll it takes on the mental health of a dog. While they are now safe at a rural VA shelter, their journey to a new life has just begun. Homeward Trails would love to be the next step on their path to their final home, but transporting and veterinary care for 3 dogs is quite an undertaking. With your donations, Archie, Arlo and Dexter never have to look back again. Please sponsor these very deserving dogs so they can start the bright future they deserve.

Roxy’s Life is in Danger

Roxy’s life might be cut short without Homeward Trails pulling her from the shelter!

Poor Roxy’s life is in danger. This 3 year old lab/shepherd mix was saved from an uncertain life only to be brought to a rural VA shelter. Although Roxy now has regular meals and a roof over her head, the shelter is completely overcrowded and is at serious risk of having to euthanize animals to make room. Roxy, as sweet as she is, is dangerously close to ending up on the euthanasia list if a rescue doesn’t pull her from the shelter as soon as possible. She is far too great of a dog to be at such risk and Homeward Trails knows the urgency of saving her before it is too late. Your donations can ensure that she is on the next ride of the shelter, sparing her life from ending too soon! Please sponsor Roxy so she can come to the DC area and live out her happy life with a new family!

Beagle Buddies want a better life

Valentina and Vincent are looking forward to being saved from life in a shelter.

Valentina and Vincent are two adorable beagles that were found as strays in southern Virginia. At only 2 year olds, they have so much to look forward to in their life, but unfortunately are living their lives in cages at a rural shelter. Valentina and Vincent are lucky to have each other and lucky they survived homelessness. Sadly though, they now sleep in hard plastic beds and just wait day after day for a potential adopter to notice them. As they continue to be overlooked, the loneliness is starting to set in. Homeward Trails would hate for these happy beagles to become depressed. Your donations can help HT make sure they are out of the shelter and to the rescue before they have to spend another night alone. Sponsor these beagle buddies and they will be so thankful for the renewed lease on life!

Darling Dove Needs a Forever Home

Found wandering rural Virginia by her lonesome, newborn puppy Dove needs our help

Dove is an absolutely precious 10-week-old brown lab mix with a black snout. This poor boy was found wandering alone in rural Virginia and was brought into the shelter as a stray.
Rural Virginia shelters often are crowded and have low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates – and are no place for a practically newborn pup that most likely still needs vaccinations. Can you help bring Dove to Homeward Trails so he can receive the TLC he needs and have his best chance at finding his loving forever family?

Newborn Kaylee Needs a Safe, Fresh Start

Brought in as a stray to a shelter in rural Virginia, Kaylee’s best chance is at Homeward Trails

Kaylee is an absolutely adorable all white great pyrenees mix with a black-spotted pink nose and one brown-patched eye. This 8-week-old gal was found wandering in rural Virginia and taken to one of our shelter partners. A low resource, low foot traffic, high euthanasia rate rural shelter is no place for a newborn pup like Kaylee. Can you help sponsor bringing Kaylee to safety at Homeware Trails so she can find the forever home she deserves?

4 Spotted Pups Need Our Help

Given to a shelter due to no fault of their own, these four newborn pups are at high risk in their current shelter.

Tatum, Tucker, Tessa, and Talullah are absolutely adorable white, brown, and tan Dalmation / Hound mix puppies. These 10-week-old cuties were surrendered by their owner due to no fault of their own and are currently in one of our partner shelters in southern Virginia. Southern Virginia shelters tend to have low resources, low foot traffic, and higher euthanasia rates – putting unvaccinated puppies at especially high risk. Can you help sponsor bringing these four cuties to Homeward Trails so they can receive the TLC they need and a safer spot to stay until they find their forever homes?

Marvelous Minnie needs our help

Valentina and Vincent are looking forward to being saved from life in a shelter.

Minnie is a teeny, black and brown, 2-year-old mixed breed that was taken into the shelter as a stray in southern Virginia. This sweet, Chihuahua-looking girl needs our help, as her best chance at a fresh start is not in a low resource, low foot traffic southern shelter with higher euthanasia rates. Can you help jailbreak Minnie and bring her to Homeward Trails so she has her best chance at a new life?

Rex is Ready to be Free

Rex wants nothing more than to be saved from a life in a shelter.

Handsome Rex is tired of living in a rural Virginia shelter. The hard plastic beds, the strong smells, the excessive noise and the bars surrounding him are hard on poor Rex’s mental health. This loving 2 year old lab mix doesn’t deserve to grow old in a cage. We don’t know what his life was like prior to coming to the shelter, but we do know that the way he is living right now is no life at all. Even sadder, the shelter is completely full and will soon start euthanizing animals to make room for new ones coming in. Rex has seen enough dogs take their final walk to know that he does not want to end up on any euthanasia lists! Homeward Trails is ready to welcome Rex with open arms but first his rescue has to be sponsored. Donations go directly to the transportation and veterinary care for Rex. Please help rescue Rex before it is too late!

Lovely Matilda was found in a flowerbed!

The sweetest girl has been waiting for her savior.

Lovely Matilda was found a stray in the most interesting place – a flower bed at a McDonalds! This sweet girl was trying anything to get noticed after being homeless for so long. Matilda is a 5 year old lab mix who has been living at a rural West Virginia shelter, hoping that her family would claim her. Sadly, not a single person has come forward to help this girl and she continues to live her life in a cage. At 5 years old, Matilda has her whole life ahead of her. Homeward Trails would be delighted to give her a second chance at life, but her rescue depends on enough donations to ensure she can get on the next ride to the DC area. Please help smiley Matilda start her new life and bloom in a new, loving home!

  • Saving 200 Lives – Our Biggest Event Ever!

We are SAVING 200 LIVES THIS WEEK!!  Our biggest event ever! This time next week we have TWO Trails UP teams hitting the roads to save lives in this unprecedented effort! And we need your support to make it happen. We are sooo excited!! And to make it more fun for everyone, this effort is part of our Quarterly Raffle. For each $100 donor, we pick one winner at random to win a $350 Amazon gift card, a custom dog or cat goody basket and 2 free tickets to our Chili Bingo event in the fall – winner to be chosen as soon as we meet our $ goal. 120 DOGS WILL BE STERILIZED….. “I love this dog that wandered up to my house. But I’ve got a female dog inside and this dog is not neutered. The cost of getting him neutered is more than I can afford. But I hate to take him to the shelter. So for now I have to keep him chained up. If I can get him neutered and vaccinated then he can live indoors with us. I would love for him to be a real part of our family.” – Mr. Jenkell For the first time ever, Homeward Trails has organized a 120-dog spay/neuter event in Galax, VA, one of our most favorite Trails UP communities. We will be traveling to Galax where we have been working for months to secure 120 dogs who desperately need neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. These animals are loved but have owners who simply cannot afford their surgery. Without this event many would face becoming pregnant and ending up in the local shelter with puppies. Or possibly facing a life on a chain. This is no way for a family to live.  As much of our Trails UP spay/neuter efforts have focused on cats due transport options and surgical availability, our hearts have been hurting as we see the shelters filling up with dogs & puppies and so many people desperately wanting to get their dogs neutered. And so we have been working overtime to put together this major event. We will be partnering with several groups to bring a mobile unit to Galax and bring these lifesaving and lifechanging services to these dogs. We cannot WAIT. Every dog will be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. And we hope to send all home with dog food, flea/tick meds and for those who need it – a dog house! The cost to us for this event comes to $120/dog  – as we are providing these services totally free to the community. PLEASE consider sponsoring a dog for this event and allowing us to truly change the life of a dog and the people who love him/her. A donation of any amount will truly make a difference! 80 CATS WILL BE STERILIZED The second half of our Trails UP team will be heading to Buchanan County to do free spay/neuter and Trap-Neuter-Return for 80 cats. The number of cat lives that will be saved from preventing unwanted kittens is often totally hard to digest. It’s HUGE. Just last month, we spayed almost 25 early pregnant cats – you can see how many lives that saved through prevention. It also means the world to the human caretakers of these kitties who so often struggle to feed their own families let alone the dozens of cats they care for. We will spend 5 days in the field working with community members in this very under-resourced communities. We will set traps in trailer parks, in yards and barns, on decks and in gardens – wherever we can – to get 80 cats sterilized, vaccinated and microchipped.    This will require not only 36 hours of trapping but more than 10 additional hours of driving to and from our surgical clinic. Our van will be loaded up with 80 cats (the very most we can fit) to make the 3.5 hour one-way trip to the surgical center. This is a huge undertaking each time we do it. But with no affordable large-scale spay/neuter clinics close by, we take what we can get. Our team is so dedicated! And so over a short period of just 5 days, we will sterilize, vaccinate and microchip 200 animals in two separate but equally under-resourced communities. And we are SO EXCITED. Please sponsor a dog or cat at just $100 and you can be a winner of a $350 Amazon gift card, a custom dog or cat goody basket and 2 free tickets to our Chili Bingo event in the fall – winner to be chosen as soon as we meet our $ goal.

  • Helping Happy Hounds – Fee Waived Adoptions for All Hounds

As you may or may not know, Virginia animal shelters are filled with Hounds. These amazing dogs are most often discarded by callous hunters, found starving wandering the countryside. Many never make it as hunters and are then tied up to chains or left along the side of the road like old furniture. A good number of them do not make it out of shelters alive. But these dogs – like all dogs – are amazing and worthy of families. We just cannot get them families fast enough to stop them from dying in our shelters when there is no more space. And so we are trying something new here. ALL HOUND DOGS ADOPTED FROM HOMEWARD TRAILS WILL BE FREE. Yes, we are WAIVING ADOPTION FEES for Hounds for the foreseeable future. We hope that will entice well-matched applicants to consider a Hound now. Use the money you save on training, treats, toys.We think all dogs are worthy. But the reality is that some take extra incentives. Some have more barriers to getting adopted. And the result is well, more end up dying. And no – this does NOT mean we are just giving dogs away. All applicants will still go through our application/screening process to ensure good homes. This is just us trying to save more dogs by eliminating one more barrier to adoption. And hey, Hound lovers can use all the extra money they can get to buy treats, right?Help us help these Hounds. Our program Helping Happy Hounds is live NOW. Let’s save some lives!
