The animals featured here are some of the hundreds Homeward Trails is asked to rescue each week. We have limited time to get them safely to rescue. Space and money are the greatest barriers to us saying yes to each request. It costs approximately $150 to rescue each dog and $100 to rescue each cat. This includes basic vet care, fuel for transport, and housing once they arrive at HT.
Please note that we make every effort to rescue all animals that are fully sponsored. Rare exceptions occur if the shelter secures a home locally with short notice or an unexpected serious medical or behavioral issue arises preventing the transport of the animal. In these cases, your sponsorship funds will be applied immediately to another animal in need if the animal you sponsored is no longer available for transfer to Homeward Trails.

Adorable Buddy is so sad. At only 9 months old, he has already experienced so much stress and sadness. Buddy’s elderly owners were left with no choice but to surrender him to a rural VA shelter, as they had serious health issues and could not care for him any longer.
